Professor: When scientists use tree rings to reconstruct past climate, a narrow ring may look like a simple sign of drought. Less water, less growth, narrower ring. But that interpretation can be misleading. Growth responds to several environmental factors at once. For example, a major volcanic eruption can put aerosols high in the atmosphere. Those particles reflect some sunlight, which can cool a region and shorten its growing season. A tree might then produce a narrow ring even if rainfall was fairly normal.
So researchers rarely interpret one tree, or even one forest, in isolation. Suppose the same species grows in two nearby valleys. One valley is mainly limited by summer moisture, while the other is cooler and mainly limited by temperature. If both sites show unusually narrow rings in the same year, temperature becomes a more plausible explanation than local drought. If only the dry valley shows the change, moisture stress becomes more likely.
This is why modern tree-ring studies begin by calibrating growth against recent instrumental records—rainfall, temperature, snowpack—whose values we already know. The rings are not tiny thermometers or rain gauges. They are biological responses. Their value comes from comparing many trees, many sites, and multiple kinds of climate evidence before extending the pattern backward in time.
